Figure 1 Output page of NBudget showing the 6 steps to estimate crop yields for all 6 crops and fertiliser N requirements for bread wheat, durum, barley and canola for the coming season.. Potential grain yields for the other crops were calculated by multiplying the potential wheat yields by constants - 1.05 for durum, 1.33 for barley, 0.50 for canola, 0.64 for chickpea and 0.80 for fababean... To answer the question, we used BOM rainfall data in "NBudget' to simulate cropping of wheat in 2009 and chickpea in 2010, grown under no-till and cultivated systems...

Each year, growers in the northern grains belt make decisions about the amount of fertiliser nitrogen (N) they are going to apply to approximately four million hectares of paddock, with the vast majority of decisions made without the benefit of soil testing... From the validation work that has been done, it is clear that 'NBudget' can assist growers and advisers to fine tune N management decisions provided they have adequate records from the previous season, i.e. prior grain yields and proteins and fertiliser N inputs for the particular paddock... The 'NBudget' algorithms are also incorporated into CropChooser on the original CropMate website, thereby providing potential users with a tool to compare the economics of various cropping options (i.e. gross margin analyses) in which N and biological effects have been valued and the value attached to the crop, rather than the cost of production of the following crop...

3. Last season's crop - The user selects from a drop-down list the crop that was last grown in the paddock and inserts the yield, protein (in the case of bread wheat, durum and barley) and amount of fertiliser N applied... As already mentioned, grain yields are calculated on the basis of WUEs with the amount of water available to the crop estimated from recent and historical rainfall records and, in some cases, push-probe testing... Potential grain yields for the other crops were calculated by multiplying the potential wheat yields by constants - 1.05 for durum, 1.33 for barley, 0.50 for canola, 0.64 for chickpea and 0.80 for fababean...
