It should be noted that these trials are not intended to substitute for commercial testing and are quite limited in their nature and insufficient to allow the companies to directly identify hybrid combinations... Each year the seed companies provide DPI&F with reports outlining the use they have made of germplasm in breeding and the sales of hybrids that contain DPI&F germplasm which is used to calculate royalty payments... The list will not identify particular line numbers but will detail the year a cross was made, the pedigrees of the lines and the reason the particular cross was made (e.g. ergot resistance) and the number of these lines that are active both in Australia and internationally...

While sorghum hybrids with varying levels of resistance are continuing to emerge in the marketplace, there is an expectation by industry that the scheme should continue to provide midge resistance ratings for these hybrids... The requirement has been recognised by each of the commercial seed companies which have agreed to continue funding of the scheme; DAFF, which supports the scheme with staff, facilities and in-kind contributions required to undertake testing, as well as GRDC, which is continuing funding of the scheme at least until 2014... We gave a presentation at the annual Australian Sorghum Research Group meeting (AusSORGM) at Cedar Creek in 2010...

Take home message Changes in technology will mean that growers are likely to be offered greater choice in types of variety allowing much better fine-tuning of sorghum production systems to match local environments... While widespread deployment of GM sorghum is unlikely in the short-term, Australian sorghum growers should get access to non-GM herbicide tolerance traits in the next few years... In the short term, the high starch sorghum preferred by the ethanol industry will also be preferred by the animal industries...

Average yield loss of canola grown from retained hybrid seed varied from site to site, but ranged from 7-17% when compared to the commercial hybrid sowing seed... The research showed reduction in blackleg resistance in the retained hybrid seed but variable grain yield responses... Additional research has been conducted by Pacific Seeds that showed significant yield reductions by retaining hybrid seed...
