Table 1: Effect of group B herbicides at recommended and greater than recommended rates on grain yield, plant density, dry matter at maturity and visual plant damage of two lentil varieties at two sites in SA, 2011... PBA HeraldXT (tested as CIPAL0702) has improved tolerance to the herbicide flumetsulam (e.g. Broadstrike , Multitude ), plus reduced sensitivity to some sulfonylurea and imidazolinone herbicide residues... Preliminary results have shown there was no effect of crop top timing on the incidence of mould in lentil in chickpeas high levels of mould were detected in the early crop topping treatment compared to all other treatments regardless of variety used (Table 2)...

The project has improved the understanding of BGM of lentils in Australia and identified important sources of disease inoculum, undertaken host-pathogen interaction studies, developed methods to screen for disease resistance and identified breeding lines with improved disease resistance... Glasshouse experiments showed little variation in the pathogenicity of isolates within each species on lentil... Results from the project have increased understanding of the epidemiology of BGM of lentils and identified key stages in the aetiology of the disease that can be used by growers to prevent yield loss...

The ultimate goal of the Lentil Genome Sequencing Consortium is to provide the most comprehensive foundation possible for the future development of DNA-based breeding tools and technologies - including marker-assisted selection - for use by pulse breeders, including Pulse Breeding Australia (PBA)... What the consortium wants to do for the lentil is provide a route to systematically understand the genetic basis of diversity in lentil populations and its impacts on plant characteristics in the paddock... At the stage, the genome project can provide essential tools for use in pulse germplasm enhancement, including molecular markers aimed at specific traits of interest such as disease resistance, abiotic stress tolerance and herbicide tolerance...

Pulses can be utilised to control weeds, through green manuring, crop topping and good cultural practices... There is an increasing interest in pulses to provide a cheaper and more reliable source of N, and with brown manuring to maximise this benefit... The role and management of pulses in a southern NSW farming systems largely revolves around the individual needs of the farm, either to supply nitrogen, control weeds, harvest for grain, or a combination of all...

Breakthrough lentil variety to reduce herbicide risk.. Breakthrough lentil variety to reduce herbicide risk Lentil growers in southern Australia have welcomed the release of the first lentil variety featuring extra herbicide tolerance... GRDC manager breeding programs, Brondwen MacLean, says the release of this new variety will be well received by growers in those regions where some particular weeds are a problem and herbicide damage from either applied flumetsulam or residual sulphonylurea and imidazolinone herbicides from the rotation can affect lentil performance. Growers who have planted back-to-back lentils or tight lentil rotations this season are urged to monitor crops closely for ascochyta blight during August, particularly if a wet winter prevails... SARDI senior pulse pathologist Dr Jenny Davidson says if growers observe symptoms of ascochyta blight in PBA Hurricane XT and PBA Jumbo2 , they should send leaf samples to SARDI... "In high-risk areas such as the Yorke Peninsula, those growing susceptible to moderately susceptible varieties such as PBA Flash and Nipper need to do a vegetative spray if ascochyta blight is present in order to hold the disease back...
