Frost puts freeze on effectiveness of ryegrass herbicide.. "Ideally, spray small ryegrass plants under warmer and frost-free periods for the best results with clethodim on ryegrass," said Dr Gill when addressing a GRDC Grains Research Update in Campbell Town, Tasmania, on the topic of controlling herbicide-resistant annual ryegrass in canola crops... We want the ryegrass to be actively growing and stress-free for clethodim to do the best job, so growers need to watch the weather forecasts closely to determine the best time to spray," Dr Gill said...

Alternative management options for controlling ryegrass while sustaining profitable cropping are being compared in an eight-year project in Western Australia... " IWM as a tool to prevent herbicide resistance becoming an impediment to sustainable farming ACR4 Start Date: 01/04/2001.. With herbicide resistant ryegrass threatening to engulf the Western Australian (WA) wheat industry, a project was started in 1997 to demonstrate the feasibility of using options other than selective herbicides to combat this problem and provide for profitable cropping... As the problem was the presence of ryegrass, success could be measured by its absence or, alternatively, its presence in low numbers...

Alternative management options for controlling ryegrass while sustaining profitable cropping are being compared in an eight-year project in Western Australia... Linden Hill, WA, 2001: Wheat in centre, brown manured lupins to left and oats-vetch cut for hay to right awaiting knockdown application to control regrowth and prevent any seed set... It aims to prevent seed return to the seed bank, breaking the cycle where genetic messages about herbicide resistance are carried from one generation to the next; to reduce the seed bank before cropping (until the seed bank is exhausted the potential exists for future build-up in weed numbers); and to maximise competitive capacity of the crop...

While herbicide resistance in annual ryegrass is increasing in Western Australia, the important pre-emergent herbicides trifluralin and atrazine, and knockdown herbicides glyphosate and paraquat still provide good weed control in most cases, new survey results reveal... AHRI senior researcher Mechelle Owen said that, overall, the survey revealed a big increase in the level of resistance in annual ryegrass to Group A and B selective herbicides such as sulfometuron and diclofop... "The 2010 survey shows that 98 per cent of annual ryegrass populations contain weeds resistant to the Group B herbicide sulfometuron, and most populations have a high number of plants surviving," she said...

Grain producers are being reminded to use the new selective pre-emergent herbicide for wheat pyroxasulfone (Sakura ) responsibly in 2013 to prolong its efficacy against resistant ryegrass... Sakura , a product from Bayer CropScience, is an important resource for controlling ryegrass populations that have already evolved widespread resistance to multiple herbicide modes of action and susceptible ryegrass populations... In a world first, prior to its commercial release in Australia, the Australian Herbicide Resistance Initiative (AHRI) - supported by the GRDC, the Australian Research Council and Kumiai Chemical Industry Co.
