Mention of a trade name or company in this publication does not imply endorsement of any product or company by the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia... In the lupin/wheat rotation, where simazine or atrazine are used in lupins, it follows that no diuron, bromoxynil or terbutryn is to be used in the cereal... Burning entire crop stubbles results in a high risk of wind erosion and is not recommended for most paddocks in Western Australia...

Herbicide resistance in Southern Australia Recent surveys of southern Australia have identified high levels of herbicide resistance in annual ryegrass... Trifluralin is damaging to wheat if it gets into the crop row, so good separation is necessary between the herbicide and the crop seed... If Trifluralin resistance is not present, it will be important to use these new herbicides for some crops in the rotation so that Trifluralin can be saved for use in crops like canola...

The foliar activity of Boxer Gold was evaluated in a number of replicated field trials across Southern Australia in 2007 and 2008, in particular targeting the control of seedling ARG plants at growth stage Z11 to Z12 (1 to 2 leaf stage)... The foliar activity of Boxer Gold was evaluated in a number of Syngenta Crop Protection and independent trials conducted across Southern Australia in 2007 and 2008, in particular targeting the control of seedling ARG plants... The research demonstrates the ability of Boxer Gold to improve the control of emerged 1 to 2 leaf ARG when used in tank mixtures with a registered rate of non-selective herbicides as per standard grower practice...

" Understanding resistance evolution to Sakura and Boxer Gold in ryegrass populations Roberto Busi and Stephen Powles, Australian Herbicide Resistance Initiative, School of Plant Biology, UWA Institute of Agriculture, The University of Western Australia, 35 Stirling Highway, Crawley, 6009 Western Australia KEYMESSAGES The potential for resistance evolution to Sakura and Boxer Gold has been examined in populations of annual ryegrass ( Lolium rigidum Gaud.)... Rotation of trifluralin, Sakura and Boxer Gold appears to be the most effective measure to delay the evolution of resistance to these herbicides... Results indicate that the resistance level to Boxer Gold further increased in the progeny after one cycle of Boxer Gold selection (Table 2)...

A seed burial study at three burial depths was conducted to determine the seed persistence and emergence patterns of eight winter and summer weeds over a period of four years... Laboratory studies were also conducted to study the germination requirements and impacts of temperature by water potential, salts and pH on the germination of five key winter species in the region... Laboratory studies were conducted to determine the minimum, optimum, and maximum germination temperatures for five winter weeds including annual ryegrass, wild oats, barley grass, brome grass and wild radish...

Research conducted by the WA No-Tillage Farmers Association (WANTFA) shows that early, dry seeding of wheat can help the crop out-compete weeds and boost yields, but only where pre-emergent herbicide application is effective... The research compared wheat seeded under dry conditions on April 21, with wheat seeded on May 31 under wet conditions after a knockdown herbicide was applied... "Early, dry seeded wheat where Sakura was applied yielded 3.5 tonnes per hectare, compared with yields of 2.5t/ha where wheat was seeded on May 31 with Sakura after the use of a knockdown herbicide."..

A combination of pre-emergent herbicides with clethodim plus Factor provides the best control of clethodim resistant annual ryegrass in canola... With the release of Boxer Gold and Sakura , farmers now have the choice of several pre-emergent herbicides for the control of annual ryegrass in cereals... The important factors in getting pre-emergent herbicides to work effectively while minimising crop damage are: to understand the position of the weed seeds in the soil; the soil type (particularly amount of organic matter and crop residue on the surface); the solubility of the herbicide; and its ability to be bound by the soil...
