The Australian National Frost Program (ANFP) was established in 2012 by UA, DAFWA and GRDC. Frost sensitivity ratings are being developed for current wheat and barley varieties to assist growers manage the risk of frost... Reductions in grain number start to occur in wheat and barley when canopy temperatures at flowering are around 0 and -2 C respectively with no visible signs of frost damage... Canopy temperatures at flowering below -4 C and -6 C in wheat and barley respectively can cause major crop losses...

Hosted by GRDC Grains Research Update for Growers sponsored by.. Barley yellow dwarf virus can be a threat in all environments, and it is recommended that seed be treated with imidicloprid, or crops closely monitored for aphid infestation and sprayed ... Pea growers have generally been advised to sow pea crops 2-3 weeks after opening rains so newly emerging crops can avoid these spores...

Frost remains hot research priority for grains industry.. Significant yield losses caused by frost in Western Australia last year have underlined the importance of the grains industry's continued investment in research, development and extension (RD&E) to address the issue... "It is important that the GRDC also encourages and funds significant scientific effort in the area of genetics-based research, because that is where the most gains in combating frost are likely to be made," he said...

Develop approaches to reliably screen for frost tolerance... Identify and select frost tolerant barley and wheat germplasm for use in breeding programs to reduce frost sensitivity of future commercial varieties... Future work will continue refining screening methods, searching for sources of tolerance, working towards developing frost sensitivity ratings of new varieties and validating the impact of frost induced sterility from mild frosts on yield in wheat and barley...

The experiments have provided much information on exotherm characteristics with and without Snomax and on the roles of ice nucleation and freezing in plant damage, although resolution of the images obtained through the two IR transparent windows needs to be improved... Some wheat and barley varieties behave differently in different regions and there is a need for development of frost chamber protocols that cause the same degree of frost damage as occurs in the field, so frost chamber testing differentiates between varieties in the same way as a field trial... Trials were carried out at varying temperatures using Snomax for ice nucleation in the AGRF chamber and in USQ frost cabinets for IRVT observations...

Frost remains hot research priority for grains industry.. Costing the national grains industry more than an estimated $360 million on average each year, frost remains a funding priority for the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) which is about to embark on new frost-related R,D&E investments, in addition to an existing stable of frost research projects...
