Until such varieties are released, northern growers and advisers need to select varieties firstly on the basis of crown rot risk and then manage for stripe rust ... There is a risk of WSMV being spread through infected seed into new areas... We have not been able to determine an economic threshold for RGB in sorghum from these trials...

Increase the direct exposure of agency researchers to key prioritised industry research questions and needs... A secondary component of this work was to examine the impact of early desiccation timing to both maximise the opportunity to save soil moisture and potentially shorten the re-cropping interval... The clear advantage over previous approaches is to ensure that the actual question or focus of this work is much more driven by industry rather than by the researcher...

Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC)-supported research has turned its attention to actively managing stripe rust in moderately resistant (MR) wheat varieties including EGA Gregory, Sunvale , Strzelecki and a range of durum varieties... "Despite a season where stripe rust was widespread, this series of trials in 2010 was unable to show any consistent economic return from stripe rust management in MR rated varieties," Mr Daniel said... The research looked at the economic benefits of rust management using fungicide and found that although all single application fungicide treatments on MR rated varieties trended to one to three per cent mean yield benefits, the levels of economic benefit were marginal...

Early or preventative foliar sprays, applied from GS32 onwards on moderately susceptible varieties, have provided the best returns in northern trials over the last three years High grain prices and low fungicide costs mean breakeven yield benefits required are often only 1-2% Application can be the major cost of treatment Consider timing when stripe rust in area but not in crop or in tank mixture with a late herbicide, near GS32, to eliminate extra application cost.. Fungicide recommendations for stripe rust management have been based on disease threshold levels on specific leaves... Recent northern evaluation by QDPI&F, NSW DPI and NGA has confirmed that the most effective management of stripe rust will be achieved by spraying at or just prior to disease becoming evident in a crop...

Although disease development is influenced by a number of factors, it is clear that the time of occurrence of stripe rust plays an important role in the nature and extent of the subsequent epidemic as reflected in sample numbers... Using paper envelopes send leaves carrying stripe rust infection to: Australian Cereal Rust Survey Plant Breeding Institute Private Bag 11 Camden, NSW 2570 Include sample information (location, variety if known, date) and collector's details; email address will be more convenient so that results can be reported in a timely manner...
