Dormancy and water sensitivity are undesirable post-harvest because barley varieties with these two traits generally need months of storage for the seed to be suitable for malting... Dr Reuss and his team investigated three main options: using agricultural chemicals to break dormancy before or after storage.. After testing a total of 20 agricultural chemicals, the team found that several were so toxic that they could not be used (they killed the barley seed), and many did not effectively break dormancy...

Dr Anthony Biddle of Processors and Growers Research Organisation, Peterborough, UK, speaking at the GRDC supported 12th International Lupin Conference in Fremantle, WA, told delegates there were many constraints to UK grain lupin production. ".. Dr Biddle indicated problem weeds include brassicas and black bindweed, but herbicide options for weed control were limited to chemicals approved for use in beans and peas... Advice concerning the significance and control of the more common pests, or potential pests, of these crops is presented... Value of the crop (high value crops cannot sustain too much damage as a small loss in yield or quality could mean a large financial loss), the cost of the spray and its application and the likely yield or quality benefit gained from control... Crop monitoring Ongoing monitoring of crops and surrounding vegetation is essential to determine the presence of both pests and predators, and when, if any, intervention is required to keep pests at an acceptable level or, if feasible, boost predator numbers by introducing them into the system...

Grain growers can use a testing service to determine if insecticide resistance exists in redlegged earth mites on their properties... Growers in the southern grains region are encouraged to use a free redlegged earth mite (RLEM) insecticide-resistance testing service made possible through a national GRDC-funded project led by the University of Melbourne, in collaboration with cesar , the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia (DAFWA), CSIRO and the University of WA... Resistance to synthetic pyrethroids (SPs) is already confirmed in large populations of RLEM across the WA grainbelt, while some populations in WA also have resistance to organophosphates (OPs)...

".. Dr Biddle indicated problem weeds include brassicas and black bindweed, but herbicide options for weed control were limited to chemicals approved for use in beans and peas... He said lupins have a small niche market in the UK, mainly for on-farm livestock feeding and the total area sown to lupins is a mere 6000 hectares...

Sensitive technology tightens residues compliance.. The National Working Party on Grain Protection (NWPGP) hosted the conference, in conjunction with Grain Trade Australia... Mr Reichstein told the conference there had been no discernible reduction in the incidence of flutriafol residues exceeding the MRL. Trace-backs showed contamination was most commonly the result of back-loading flutriafol-treated fertiliser deliveries with grain, or from equipment coming into contact with the treated fertiliser...

Use of liquid dichlorvos to control insects in stored cereal grain has been restricted this harvest because of changes to registrations of products containing dichlorvos... Under the new permit, the chemical can only be used for treating grain pests if it is supplied in packaging with a dry break (micromatic) coupler closed delivery system... Grain storage expert Peter Botta says it is illegal for growers to use dichlorvos products supplied without the dry break coupler because it is contrary to the permit conditions in place, which are designed to manage risks of exposure to workers...
