To reduce the cost of combining traits, molecular markers associated with the genes controlling trait expression have been identified... Breeding lines evaluated under DAQ00175 demonstrated that the new germplasm can alleviate more barley production issues than the previous germplasm or introductions from other parts of Australia... Rather than repeat the outline of breeding activities applied under DAQ00110, information about genes and traits in the new germplasm resource is presented...

The investment has been driven by the acute skills shortage and potential succession planning issues facing the grains industry... "The GRDC has long recognised the need to encourage students into agriculture but in the past 12 months we have taken an even more proactive role in developing a grains industry education strategy with a suite of related education resources for use at schools and community events," she says... The GRDC capacity building team has been working on programs to: educate teachers and career advisers about opportunities in the grain industry, given their role as key influencers over student career decision-making; target tertiary students who are already likely to study science as a career and outline to them the opportunities in agricultural and plant science as a specialty field; and promote the science behind grain production to secondary-school students to showcase the broad range of careers and opportunities available...

Sorghum growers weigh up January heatwave risk.. Sorghum growers looking to plant in November are being urged to weigh up the risk of excessively high temperatures occurring in January and coinciding with critical development phases of crops... The research found the most severe impacts on yield occurred when high temperatures around flowering reduced the viability of sorghum pollen causing reduced seed set and yield loss, according to Professor Graeme Hammer, Director of the University of Queensland's Centre for Plant Science at the Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation (QAAFI)...

Central Queensland farmers now have a new enemy in the battle against herbicide resistant weeds - glyphosate resistant Sweet Summer Grass... Mr Cook urged growers to check paddocks for survivors after spraying glyphosate and have them tested for resistance to ascertain what herbicides are still effective... "Effective control is likely to be a combination of other effective herbicide modes of action in combination with non-chemical tactics such as strategic cultivation, or if a small number of plants, hand roguing," Mr Cook said...
