Future projects maintain management groups with growers, agribusiness and RD&E agency representation and with real decision-making power... Future projects maintain a balance between productivity and sustainability activities, research and extension activities, activities in different locations and different lobby groups to avoid the capture of project resources and so ensure benefits across the wider industry... 'Best' use of water affects other properties of the soil and the impacts of modern farming practices (e.g. zero tillage, controlled traffic, and wide rows) are becoming evident...

Crop sequences will continue to be an important part of profitable and sustainable cropping systems in WA. Research conducted in this project showed the potential for substantial improvements in the profitability of crop rotations if break crops were used more widely... The new insights about the value of break crops in profitable crop rotations and the revised assumptions to the MIDAS model have been used to improve new models being developed by the CSIRO and DAFWA (the Land Use Sequence Optimiser (LUSO) and Leap economic models, respectively)... For example, there had been no research into the break crop effects of oaten hay in WA and one of the most common rotations on WA farms - lupin/wheat/canola/barley - had not been examined...

Researchers identified by GRDC and who have undertaken GRDC-funded, pesticide-related research from 2007 to 2009 were contacted seeking summary information on their projects... The information provided by the researchers has been collected and collated and entered into an online, password-protected database... , the project team receives regular pesticide active ingredient and trade name updates from the APVMA in order to ensure the database is current...

Sclerotinia stem rot and blackleg are the two major disease constraints to canola production in Australia... After identifying the genes, they will be functionally analysed by mutation (or silencing) and their role in disease will be determined... A link to more recent research can be found at http://www.botany.unimelb.edu.au/blackleg/index.html..

Minor and specialty grains industries can suffer from a lack of suitable pest management options needed to ensure sustainable production... The purpose was to ensure that industries had an appreciation of the prerequisites for a successful permit application and pesticides being evaluated have chemical industry agreement and are capable of being approved by the APVMA for use on that crop... The list was then assessed against regulatory requirements and prioritised on the basis of need and likelihood of success...

The irrigation scheduling program 'AQUAMAN' has helped growers and advisers to improve water use efficiency... The tight water budgeting and rising energy costs mean that there is a need for growers to improve their skills in using limited water supplies more efficiently than has previously been the case... There is a need to develop agronomic practices for these varieties to match their yield to full season varieties, and to ensure the production of high quality peanuts for Australian and overseas markets...

Any GRDC funded research involving pesticides be critically assessed from a 'chance of success' perspective, i.e. compound has manufacturer support and is likely to gain regulatory approval... To be approved, a use has to have been assessed against criteria relating to the environment, consumer exposure, use exposure and trade... To date, metribuzin has been registered for use in field peas (PER8833) and clethodim # in adzuki beans (PER12044)...

For example, some growers still experience problems with hardware... The remote sensing technologies such as EM38s and gamma radiometrics were evaluated for growers... Six paddocks were subsequently surveyed for plant available water content (PAWC) where the drained upper limits and crop lower limits were measured at 123 locations...
