inter row sowing

Catalogue: GRDC Updates (North)
Until such varieties are released, northern growers and advisers need to select varieties firstly on the basis of crown rot risk and then manage for stripe rust ... There is a risk of WSMV being spread through infected seed into new areas... We have not been able to determine an economic threshold for RGB in sorghum from these trials...

Inter-row sowing can slow crown rot build-up.. Dr Simpfendorfer says the results showed that sowing between the previous cereal rows reduced the incidence of plants infected with the crown rot pathogen F. pseudograminearum by 45 per cent and the severity of disease by 51 per cent across sites and various winter cereals ( Figure 1 )... Although inter-row sowing reduced the severity and incidence of crown rot in bread wheat, barley and durum varieties, the results showed it was slightly less effective at reducing crown rot severity in barley (average 34 per cent) compared with bread wheat (43 per cent) and durum (52 per cent) ( Figure 1 )...

The increasing area of herbicide resistant ryegrass, wild oats and brome grass on cropping farms in the southern region was a cause for concern there was a need to develop improved weed control options... 1) A range of current, new and experimental soil residual pre-emergent herbicides were evaluated for the control of ryegrass... The group includes the Hart Fieldsite group, University of Adelaide, researchers with similar research objectives, grain end-users, independent consultants and importantly representatives from the chemical companies involved, to ensure that the strategy of crop topping early maturing cereals is made possible...

UNFS trial manager and upper-north grower Matt McCallum says trials in SA from 2004 to 2007 showed that wheat-on-wheat sown on the inter-row could increase yield by an average of six per cent compared with on-the-row... "Effective inter-row sowing can boost crop yields by reducing disease, improving plant establishment, creating more effective weed control and establishing a better microclimate for seedlings," he says... "The first year is about setting up your sowing equipment to achieve straight lines, so the inter-row sowing can come into play the following year," he says...

Select a seeding system for your soil.. "When selecting for a higher SBU system, there are many factors to consider including single or double shoot, distinct split-rows or a wide band sowing, integrated opener design or wing attachment for an existing opener, and fertiliser placement relative to the seed zone," Dr Desbiolles said... "The best treatment, reaching over 90 percent emergence, in the Moorlands trial was obtained by adding a shallow operating scooping share ahead of a triple disc seeding system to clear away the top 3-4cm of soil into the inter-row zone and assist with placing seeds into moist soil," Dr Desbiolles said...
