The material is now at the F6 stage with selected lines showing promising levels of resistance in both field and seedling screens (up to 86% reduction in disease severity compared to EGA Bellaroi )... Significant field resistance to CR has been successfully transferred into durum wheats from hexaploid sources (up to 86% reduction in CR severity compared to EGA Bellaroi )... The project has also developed some lines which appear to have promising levels of resistance to FHB. Once backcrossed and incorporated into commercial varieties post-project this material should prove valuable in an integrated management system to control both CR and FHB...

Impact of crown rot on yield and quality is a balancing act between inoculum levels and soil water.. Table 1: Pratylenchus thornei tolerance, crown rot resistance ratings and yield of 10 bread wheat and 1 durum variety evaluated at Gurley in 2012... It is evident that varieties which have good levels of tolerance to Pt combined with some level of resistance to crown rot (even MS) had a significant improvement in yield in the presence of both of these diseases...

Although the trials were not designed to focus on nematodes, a convincing trend was apparent after 2008 that indicated the root lesion nematode Pratylenchus thornei (Pt) was having a frequent and large impact on wheat variety yield... During 2007 & 2008 a common series of 5 bread wheat varieties, 4 barley varieties and 1 durum were evaluated in all 18 trials (NB only 17 yield results are presented as barley varieties were heavily damaged by emus at 1 site in 2008)... 2. Less apparent range in variety Pt tolerance than seen for bread wheat Figure 5 shows the variety yield performance compared to EGA Wylie for all wheat varieties evaluated in both 2008 and 2009...

Trials were conducted at Breeza, Narrabri, Emerald, Brookstead, Kingsthorpe and Gatton, although only the trials that exhibited significant levels of lodging are reported in this paper... The results from the trials suggest that Durums do possess greater yield potential than bread wheats of similar (quick) maturity, but also have a higher lodging risk on average... *Soil N measured for 0-120cm depth at Breeza & Emerald, 0-180cm at Gatton, and 0-90cm at Narrabri Table 2...
