One Avena abyssinica and one Avena strigosa accession had resistance to the most virulent strains of leaf rust but none were resistant to the most virulent stem rust strains... The principal expected outcomes of this project are improved yield potential and grain quality unattainable by conventional breeding methods plus lower production costs for oat growers, processors and exporters... The techniques used in this work are a valuable method for obtaining new genetic resistance to important leaf diseases without the need for genetic modification technology that has not been accepted by the community or market...

It can be reported that no new pathotypes of wheat stem rust, wheat leaf rust, barley leaf rust or oat stem rust have been detected to date... Cultivar responses are not expected to change... It was less common in northern NSW; the pathotype associated with LongReach LincolnA (64 E0 A-) has been recovered at low frequency, but does not appear to have had an adverse effect on LongReach LincolnA and BolacA during the season; and the 'Yr17-27' pathotype was first reported in October (Cereal Rust Report, Volume 8, Issue 7, available at http://sydney.edu.au/agriculture/plant_breeding_institute/cereal_rust/reports_forms.shtml )...

The amount of rust present on this sample means that it could be used to infect a differential set directly, reducing the time for pathotype determinations from six weeks to three weeks...
