Large group of people standing in line gazing into a crop field.. Growers inspecting Crown Rot Analytical trials at Bellata... A PreDicta B test can be arranged by contacting commercial testing service, Crown Analytical Services, which provides northern growers and advisors with bags, soil corers, protocols and procedures for sampling as well as an interpretation of results once tests are completed by the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) in Adelaide...

Mallee grower Allen Buckley has lifted the health of soils on his Waikerie, South Australia, farm... Growers: Allen and Jenny Buckley Location: Waikerie, South Australia Area: 5000 hectares Crops: wheat, cover crops Livestock: 1000 Merino ewes, half joined to Merino rams and half to cross-bred rams Soils: predominantly sandy Average annual rainfall: 250 millimetres (160mm growing season).. Allen is also experimenting with cover crops - another unusual sight in the Mallee - after seeing the results of CSIRO and South Australian Research and Development Institute trials on his farm and visiting growers in the US who sow a mixed cover crop rather than a monoculture...

Impacts on soil temperature at a depth of 20 cm were also assessed... Existing research at Wellington, NSW, investigated the role of summer cover crops (cowpea and millet) in increasing residue and their impacts on subsequent wheat crop production... The research has shown that residue retention was successful in decreasing maximum soil temperatures recorded at a soil depth of 20 cm...

Single tillage events can reduce moisture but may boost yields and profitability in the presence of a high weed burden... Dr Yash Dang, Queensland Department of Science, Information Technology, Innovation and the Arts (DSITIA) senior scientist (soil and nutrient management) says balancing soil moisture and weed control has been a dilemma for growers choosing to use strategic tillage to manage difficult-control-weeds within an established no-till farming system... Dr Dang said grain yields showed little response to tillage and one-time tillage using either chisel or offset disc tended to increase grain yields at all the sites but only significantly at the Condamine site...
