Table 1: Effect of group B herbicides at recommended and greater than recommended rates on grain yield, plant density, dry matter at maturity and visual plant damage of two lentil varieties at two sites in SA, 2011... PBA HeraldXT (tested as CIPAL0702) has improved tolerance to the herbicide flumetsulam (e.g. Broadstrike , Multitude ), plus reduced sensitivity to some sulfonylurea and imidazolinone herbicide residues... Preliminary results have shown there was no effect of crop top timing on the incidence of mould in lentil in chickpeas high levels of mould were detected in the early crop topping treatment compared to all other treatments regardless of variety used (Table 2)...

Wheat variety yields in 2011, across 25 South Australian NVT, were above average and ranged from 1.4t/ha at Wanbi to 6.6 t/ha at Cummins, with the trial at Penong failing due to variability from grass competition... This early maturing wheat, is susceptible to CCN but has moderate resistance to stem and stripe rust and is MS/S to leaf rust and MS to yellow spot... Seed is licensed to Pacific Seeds MaceA Mace (RAC 1372), released by AGT, is derived from Wyalkatchem, but has an AH classification taller plant height, is MR/MS to stem rust, MR to leaf rust and is rated..

Mean site grain yield from the NVT trials ranged from 0.55 t/ha at Streaky Bay to 5.2 t/ha at Mundulla, with only Minnipa discarded due to very low yield and high variability... The outstanding varieties for grain yield were again the feed varieties Fleet, Hindmarsh and Keel, exhibiting consistent advantages across all sites and averaging 120%, 122% and 119% of Schooner grain yield respectively... The other major difference in disease resistance is the susceptibility of Hindmarsh to spot form of net blotch compared to Keel and Fleet which are rated MR-MS. Keel also has a reputation as being very itchy largely due to its long rachilla hairs (other varieties with long rachilla hair include Clipper, Baudin and Buloke)...

The project was undertaken to develop crop management strategies to increase grain protein in lupins grown in Western Australia (WA)... It was concluded that the best option for farmers is to grow high protein cultivars... Two possibilities are suggested...

Caption: At most DAFWA-GRDC trial sites in WA's eastern grainbelt, delaying nitrogen application until eight or 12 weeks after sowing (near to flowering) or splitting applications produced similar yield results to earlier times of N application... According to Mr Seymour, at most sites over the two years, delaying N application until eight or 12 weeks after sowing (close to flowering time) or splitting applications produced similar yield results to earlier times of N application...

Peanut diseases are discussed in more detail throughout this research update this section has been kept brief... As the crop does not mature evenly it can be difficult to determine exactly when to dig... Monitoring of commercial crops suggest that crop oils are ineffective in managing high SLW populations (Fig. 2)...

Importantly new production environments such as Mackay and the Burdekin will present new challenges for defining BMP given the specific conditions that apply in each region particularly in relation to optimum planting and harvesting windows... APSIM Peanut uses all of the historical climate data including rainfall temperature radiation and applied irrigation to predict yield outcomes... Additional work needs to be conducted in the Burdekin and Mackay regions to cater for specific production scenarios and climatic zones which can vary considerably within each region...
