Markers have been implemented for rust resistance (VPM resistance gene complex, Yr17, Lr37 and Sr38 ), resistance to black point, and resistance to barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV), in a total of about 2,700 tests... Marker implementation will increase dramatically over the next few years as markers for traits of high priority to EGA are validated... In 2003/04 nearly 300 lines were also assessed for resistance to BYDV using markers...

The objective of the project was to explore methods to integrate new marker technologies, simulation modelling and statistics with the aim of increasing the rate of genetic gain in breeding programs focused on complex traits such as grain yield... To the end the main areas of research were 1) developing the capacity to detect quantitative trait loci (QTL) in breeding populations and 2) using simulation modelling to enhance plant breeders' understanding of complex traits and genotype x environment (GxE)... The objective of the project was to explore ways of helping crop improvement programs use new technologies to improve progress for complex traits...

There is a need to identify molecular markers linked to minor genes controlling resistance that are suitable for implementation in breeding... Achievements in identifying molecular markers and their genetic inheritance developed during this project have provided tools needed to track and select lines from breeding populations... Included in the agreement are other sources of resistance and homozygous populations that can be accessed by DAFWA in future collaborative research to identify and characterise novel sources of SNB resistance...
