There are few positives to come out of back-to-back dry seasons - such as that experienced by South Australia's south east - but growers can use the experience to dig deep below the soil surface to understand what is contributing to crops not fulfilling their yield potential... Dr Melissa Fraser, a soil consultant with the Rural Solutions SA division of Primary Industries and Regions SA (PIRSA), says a lot of soils in south east SA have a physical or chemical impediment that restricts root growth to the top 10cm of the soil, hindering the plants ability to access moisture and nutrients stored deeper in the profile... Dr Fraser is encouraging growers in the south east to dig holes over summer and do some deep soil testing to get a basic understanding of the make-up of the subsoil and to understand what might be holding back yield potential...

Soil organic carbon makes up about 58 per cent of the mass of organic matter and is usually reported in a soil analysis report as the concentration (i.e. per cent) of organic carbon in soil (see Chapter 1 for more detail)... If a soil has a significant amount of gravel or stone material, this fraction is removed before analysis with the final soil carbon or nutrient assessment being only representative of the mineral component of the remaining soil... Understanding how organic matter cycles through the soil and what drives its accumulation and loss is critical to maintaining it at optimal levels within agricultural systems...

Crop Use of Fertiliser, Topsoil and Subsoil P We had 7 experiments in the field under rain-out shelters where we directly measured the uptake of P fertiliser (using radioisotope) under wet (decile 7-8) and dry (decile 2-3) in-season conditions... We applied P fertiliser containing a radioactive tracer that gives the fertiliser a unique 'fingerprint' so that we could track the uptake of fertiliser into the plant... We are examining the value of information that might support decision making around P management including the value of accurate soil P testing and the value of being able to estimate when soil P fertility will fall below sufficiency using modelling techniques...
