In low rainfall regions of south-eastern Australia, farmers have increasingly adopted continuous cereal cropping strategies as non-cereal crops are perceived as riskier than cereals due to greater yield and price fluctuations broad-leaf crops make up only a very small proportion of the total area of sown crops... A design has been developed in consultation with a biometrician which will allow the rigorous comparison of up to 40 individual break sequences (unique combinations of break type and management options over 2 consecutive years) analysed spatially with a continuous cereal as a monitoring check... A guide for improved decision making for the implementation and management of break phases in low rainfall south-eastern Australia will be developed and promoted to the regional communities as part of this project and prior to its completion in June 2015...

1. Management of crown rot It is important that reliable estimates of yield losses in barley in Victoria caused by both F. pseudograminearum and Fusarium culmorum are determined... Crown rot research has shown that average annual losses of 4.5% in paddocks with crown rot symptoms can be reduced following adoption of management strategies evaluated within this project... Resistance to bacterial blight In this project, field peas were shown to vary in their response to bacterial blight caused byPss the inheritance of this variation and its nature (i.e. resistance or tolerance to infection) needs to be determined if breeders are to make continuing progress in developing field pea varieties with resistance to this disease...

Prof Rengel said a double-haploid wheat mapping population - created from lines differing in N-use efficiency - was phenotyped during the project, and this population offered promise in identifying Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) associated with N-use efficiency... Prof Rengel said the research found 'vegetative growth' measures to be ineffective in-the-field predictors of N-use efficiency throughout the season, except potentially for barley at sites with relatively low soil fertility...

A grains future beckons Gippsland's graziers - Southern Cover.. Gippsland, in eastern Victoria, is not known for its cereal production - between 2003 and 2007 the region's annual harvest ranged from a comparatively meagre 5000 tonnes to 20,000t, according to Australian Bureau of Statistics figures... The Southern Farming Systems (SFS) Gippsland branch recently released its Gippsland grain and cereal forage industry report, which identifies potential production of up to 230,000t a year from the region, an additional $67.2 million for the local economy and up to 1560 new jobs...
