A just confirmed case of annual ryegrass resistant to both glyphosate and paraquat is a warning to all farmers that rotating herbicide modes of action alone does not solve all your herbicide resistance problems, according to researchers... The Australian Glyphosate Sustainability Working Group (AGSWG), supported by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), said it was the first case of glyphosate plus paraquat resistance in any weed species in Western Australia and a world first for wine grapes... AGSWG executive officer Andrew Storrie said the multiple herbicide resistance appeared to have been caused by 20 years of unplanned rotating of paraquat and glyphosate when treating the vine row strip...

"This rise in resistance means there may be a time soon when we will have no post-emergent herbicides that can be used in cereals on brome grass, and while we've been working hard to identify new chemistries, so far there are no good results - we don't have anything up our sleeves," he said...

As a green manure crop, soybeans provide good quantities of dry matter and large amounts of nitrogen... Better efficacy could be obtained by using smaller nozzles and lower water rates on small weeds... The problem with the system in the wet tropics is that decomposition is rapid and much of the available nitrogen will be lost through leaching or denitrification under waterlogged conditions...
