Most of the weed seedbank remains on the soil surface where exposure to light could have an important in uence on the germination behaviour of B. diandrus and B. rigidus... Across the experiment, germinability of B. rigidus from the in-crop habitat was found to be slow and incomplete, and populations of B. rigidus collected from Minlaton and Warooka on the YP showed no germination at all in light/dark conditions at any of the tested time-points (Fig. 1)... In summary, strong differences in light/dark germinability were observed in the collected populations of B. diandrus and B. rigidus right through until the end of the growing season (end of September), with B. rigidus germination never exceeding 40%...

In the short term, IWM costs more than a herbicide only approach but this should be viewed as an investment in the longer life of our herbicide resource... In the short term (at least the next 8 years), these crops will in essence provide new uses for old herbicides and old herbicide groups... In summary, the research also indicates that the public is least likely to approve of GMOs that: Benefit a company over the public; Involve gene transfer from species that are not closely related; Are not undertaken for a societal benefit; Are perceived as being possibly harmful to people or the environment; or Is a food over a non-food application...

In a recent survey by Fleet and Gill (2008), farmers in low rainfall districts in South Australia and Victoria reported increasing incidence of barley grass in their crops... Our research has clearly shown higher levels of seed dormancy in barley grass and brome grass populations collected from cropping fields than those from non-crop situations such as long-term pastures, fence-lines or roadsides... Results of the study conclusively showed the adaptive value of selection for increased seed dormancy in cropping habitats...
