A plan for industry-wide protocols was commissioned by the Maize Association of Australia four years ago with GRDC support, after the mycotoxin fumonisin - known to be toxic to horses and pigs - was detected in crops in the Riverina... The industry move also follows the rejection of two shipments of Australian whole maize by Japanese authorities after unacceptable levels of the carcinogenic mycotoxin aflatoxin B1 were detected, in response to concerns of maize processors and exporters... "All the major processors (from the food, stockfeed and pet food industries) were represented, along with a range of other stakeholders including growers, the seed industry, grain merchants, handlers and exporters."..

The tour will visit ground breaking GRDC-funded trials into new crop germplasm, agronomic practices and soil and crop nutrition being conducted at the University of Queensland (UQ) Gatton campus by UQ, CSIRO and Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation (QAAFI)... Being held from Monday September 8 to Wednesday September 10, the tour encompasses two separate groups of GRDC northern panel members, GRDC board members and staff - one touring to the northern rivers region of New South Wales, Toowoomba, Gatton and Kingaroy while the other group will travel from Emerald to Moura and Biloela... At the conclusion of the tour, participants will gather in Brisbane to discuss their observations, industry feedback and suggestions...
