The project was designed to provide information about the ability of biserrula ( Biserrula pelecinus) pastures to contribute to grain production systems in the medium and low rainfall wheatbelt areas of Western Australia... Pasture crop rotation trials demonstrated that biserrula and its rhizobia are capable of persistence through at least three consecutive cereal crops, allowing farmers to crop more frequently and still retain legume dominant pastures... Further work is required to identify what appears to be a secondary plant compound in biserrula that can induce photosensitisation in some environmental circumstances...

Greg Bender, GRDC Program Consultant "Diverse" is a way to describe pastures: diverse uses in different farming enterprises and regions, and biodiversity of species including annual and perennial grasses, legumes, herbs and shrubs... Clearly pastures make a valuable contribution to the production of agricultural commodities, but the inherent diversity of pastures makes it difficult to estimate their total economic and environmental value to Australia... Ongoing support for research, development and extension (R,D&E) in pasture varieties, agronomy and management from federal and state governments, universities, CSIRO and rural R&D funding organisations is an essential part of the success of pastures...

The main aim of the project was to measure the physical, financial and management benefits of adopting improved pasture varieties and/or management practices, and to list other benefits and difficulties as experienced by these farmers... The farm chosen for the case study in this region is responding to the need for a profitable rotation by making a significant shift from grain legume rotations to the establishment of improved pastures... With no chemical nitrogen needed for the cropping phase, savings are estimated at $51 to $85 a hectare...

A better understanding of subtropical pasture species and the value of farm biodiversity have been among the most valuable outcomes of the national Grain & Graze program for Queensland farm manager Steve Wilkins... Before coming to 'Kioma' in late 2003 from southern NSW (Boorowa) Steve says he had little experience with subtropical pasture and it seemed to be a "hit and miss affair" in the area... Steve says that as a result of the survey, and attending the conference for survey participants in early 2008, he has a renewed appreciation of the value of biodiversity in maintaining healthy farming systems...

" Rotations to reduce impact of nematodes in Western cereal cropping systems DAW00124 Start Date: 01/07/2005.. Results for Pratylenchus penetrans indicate that RLN could possibly adapt to different hosts, depending on cropping history... To optimise the management of RLN with the use of rotations, these weeds should be controlled in cropping paddocks...

There is limited data to support this concern in the southern HRZ. Trials conducted over several years at Lake Bolac, Werneth and Inverleigh showed no significant increase in ARG population in 2013 when grazed in summer and winter compared to no grazing (Figure 1)... Population of annual ryegrass measured in late winter over consecutive years at Inverleigh, Lake Bolac and Werneth... We believe of greater importance is the amount of ARG that is likely to survive late in the cropping phase, irrespective of whether grazing has occurred or not...

Designed for Australian farmers and their advisors the Pasture Picker tool allows growers easy access to regionally specific information about sown pasture species and varieties... Content on Pasture Picker has been developed by CSIRO, state agency and private sector agronomists working on behalf of Pastures Australia whose partners include, GRDC, MLA, AWI, Dairy Australia as well as RIRDC who manage the program on behalf of all the partners... What makes Pasture Picker different is that growers can choose to filter the content by selecting their region (from a map or list), the end use of the pasture and the soil type and rainfall in which it is to be grown...
