In a survey of 134 paddocks across the northern grains region during 2003-06, we found that 41% of sunflower crops were sown into a long fallow following a winter cereal (wheat or barley), 25% of crops were sown into a short fallow following sorghum, and just 13% were double cropped into wheat or barley stubble (L Serafin and S Belfield, unpublished)... Further trial work is needed to provide additional data to develop our understanding of the full impacts of sulfur nutrition... The results suggest that sunflower oil contents may be more specifically targeted and fertiliser N inputs more accurately determined for optimum profitability...

Sunflowers build a little profit bridge over the summer.. The Zwars took advantage of 100 millimetres of rain in early November and sowed a mix of millet, sunflowers and cowpea on 80ha of hay stubble in a paddock prone to waterlogging... Russell would like to see further research into the role of cover crops in southern farming systems: "It's hard to put a number on what the benefit is from the diversity in our system - I'd be interested to see how the numbers stack up over a 10-year period...

Into the first full moisture profile he has seen in his farming career, Wimmera grower David Jochinke planted sunflowers, a crop that used to be widely grown in the region in the 1970s.. David, from Murra Warra about 30 kilometres north of Horsham, planted the sunflowers as an 'opportunity crop' to offset losses from downgraded grain and weed control during the wet summer... Apart from the cost of transporting the harvest to one of the few southern sites equipped for drying and receiving sunflowers, David says the cost of seed, at $64/ha, was the largest expense and he was expecting the crop to return $500 to $600 a tonne...
