stunt nematode

Catalogue: GRDC Final Reports
RLN cause substantial yield losses, particularly in wheat, but they reproduce on numerous summer and winter crops... The resistance experiments also demonstrated the large range of susceptibility within crops, even for barley, providing an additional benefit from this work... We conducted a targeted survey of nine farms in the northern grain region to gain knowledge about the presence of the stunt nematode and zoosporic fungi such as Olpidium (zoosporic fungi are characterised by the production of spores called zoospores which have flagella and are motile in water)...

Summary Root-lesion nematodes are found throughout the northern grain region and have the potential to reduce wheat yields by up to 50% and chickpea yields by 30%... Best management practices rely on choosing tolerant varieties (that will yield well when nematodes are present) and growing resistant crops (to keep nematode populations low)... The most reliable way to tell if nematodes are present on farms is to have soil tested in a laboratory because symptoms of nematode damage can be difficult to distinguish - often attributed to "a dry finish", "a poor season" or "nutrient deficiencies"...

Overall, wheat diseases have the potential to cause very significant costs for farmers... The estimates of potential losses assume that for each disease, it is the only one that develops... The drier seasons of the past decade (Section 3) would not favour these two diseases and is the likely cause of their reduction in importance...

Figure 1 Wheat yields were doubled when grown after two resistant crops.. Best management practices rely on choosing tolerant varieties (that will yield well when nematodes are present), avoiding very susceptible wheat varieties (that build very high populations of nematodes in the soil), and growing resistant crops (to keep nematode populations low)...
