Barley with genetically unique sources of adaptation to the low rainfall environments has been evaluated using lines from the International Centre for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA)... Barley lines from ICARDA have shown potential for the improvement of adaptation, with adaptive features derived from wild barley and primitive barley landraces, and selection for yield and associated adaptive traits in drought prone environments with soils of low fertility... The germplasm and information gathered in this project will benefit industry since the project has had a focus on the improvement of adaptation as related to yield and physical grain quality...

Previous GRDC-funded projects have identified several Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) controlling the most important biotic and abiotic constraints to sorghum production in Australia -midge resistance (MR) and staygreen (SG)... The markers have been screened in 12 other populations and the results suggest that all four SG and three of the four MR QTL are expressed in a variety of other germplasm (the fourth QTL is the subject of a separate GRDC-funded project and is not assessed )... The results suggest that marker-assisted selection can be undertaken with these SG and MR QTL with a high likelihood of the QTL being expressed...
