We have an unpredictable climate so timing the move from pasture to crop is a risk; lucerne is difficult to establish and remove; and the need to manage the water table never stops... The crops should be well nodulated and highyielding and the residual nitrogen benefits should be effectively captured by the following crop or pasture... Research by Mike Hughes, NSW DPI Grafton, and colleagues during the 1980s established that a 2.6 t/ha crop fixed about 265 kg N/ha (Hughes and Herridge 1989)... Bug thresholds for edible soybeans are considerably lower than for crushing beans and range from 0.33-0.6/m 2depending on crop size* (no of seeds per plant), the threshold being higher in larger crops...

Benefit of work to farmers Our trial results show that, using N fertiliser, the yields experienced when cropping newlycleared land can be maintained on soils that have lost significant amounts of soil organic matter... Sowing rule is not critical, but a rule of 50-70cm of wet soil for wheat and 70-90cm of wet soil for sorghum is suggested...
