The research has made a significant contribution to our understanding of the mechanisms underlying these traits, identified novel strategies for further or more rapid improvements, and provides a solid foundation for both further research and better management of defects that result in downgrading of quality prior to harvest.. Annual screening of advanced lines from Australian breeding programs suggests little improvement in sprouting resistance despite breeders having had access to resistant germplasm and quantitative trait loci (QTL) information for a considerable period... Our work in Brachypodium presents a novel opportunity to use an undomesticated wild grass to identify novel sources of high dormancy germplasm...

Late-maturity alpha-amylase (LMA) is constitutive in tall LMA genotypes while semi-dwarf (Rht1, Rht2) LMA genotypes usually require a cool temperature shock midway through grain development... Previous research at UA indicates that the cool temperature shock requirement is associated with the semi-dwarfing genes Rht1 & Rht2, suggesting that the mechanism involves changes in amount of, or sensitivity to, plant hormones such as gibberellic acid (GA) and abscisic acid... The results appeared to provide a possible explanation for the cool temperature shock-triggered expression of LMA in some semi-dwarf wheat varieties...
