Efficient Spraying to Meet Environmental Demands "learning to spray with coarser sprays" Spraying is about placing the correct dose of chemical at the right place at the right time... Without pesticides the world would find feeding itself a monumental challenge, but this does not mean that the community at large embraces the idea of managing pests with chemicals... As farmers today, I believe we are making some decisions that may lead to increased drift risk...

I am the principle spray operator and, like the vast majority of broad acre farmers, I regularly apply pesticides including herbicides, insecticides and fungicides to control weeds, insects and crop disease... Pesticides are widely used in agriculture to control weeds, insects and crop disease, reducing labour, energy and water requirements, and optimising potential crop yield and ultimately farm income... The overall objective of the project was to promote the adoption of the best practice spray application process by engaging key stakeholders (including government, chemical and spray applicator manufacturers, researchers, farmers and spray operators) and by applying principles from around the world on ways to simplify pesticide application whilst maximising pesticide efficacy and field efficiency, and sustaining the environment...

The particular directive includes a requirement that treated drinking water should not have more than a total content of pesticides of 0.5 parts per billion (measured as milligrams/litre) and that an individual active substance should not exceed 0.1 parts per billion... The new lists contain pesticides whose movement to water that is more under the control of the farmer... Good practice for sprayer filling/emptying/cleaning and minimising erosion and spray drift could avoid further withdrawals of designated priority substances...

As farmers today I believe we are making some decisions that may lead to increased drift risk... The APVMA direction is placing more pressure on the person applying the pesticide by requiring the applicator to conduct a risk assessment on sprayer set up, the weather conditions and the surrounding downwind environment and to ultimately decide to spray or not... If we are to maintain market access in these markets, we must be looking at these changes and trends with a view to develop a self regulated practical approach to reduce the need for further regulations...

The guidelines require labels to include a specific spray droplet size category (very fine, fine, medium, very coarse or extremely coarse), spray drift restraints statements and requirement for mandatory no-spray zones... There are currently 44 different products listed by the AVPMA that will undergo review of their spray drift guidelines... The proposed buffer zones will impact on the application of many phenoxy based products...
