4. There is a need for strong leadership amongst dairy farmers, advocacy bodies and companies to ensure they think outside the square to meet the future challenges and opportunities... The theory suggests that the co-operative can serve the members' interests by taking produce to markets and extracting a better price from the market place than its competitors due to economies of scale... The model should be structured to extract the best farm gate returns for its members and also have the processing capacity to achieve the right balance of products to return a competitive dividend...

Following my research, I believe that commodity production may well be the best way for Australia to exploit its comparative advantage of relatively cheap land and good environmental standards... The study expanded the definition of value adding to include relationships with customers, diversifying and investing off-farm... Australian farmers also need to look to expand their businesses to include value adding in some form, be that better alignment with end point processors, further involvement up the supply chain through investment or partnerships, investing off-farm or diversifying geographically to spread risk...
