Business structures, personal and business resilience, profit and risk in low rainfall environments and grain marketing will be discussed at an upcoming Farm Business Update for growers in the Forbes region... A shortage of rainfall has been an issue in the latter part of this season, and agronomist Sarah Jacobson will discuss how growers can manage profit and risk in low rainfall environments... Consultant Dennis Hoiberg from Lessons Learnt Consulting considers personal and commercial resilience a vital part of every farming business and he will speak at the event on how growers can develop resilience...

New pulse varieties with improvements in adaptation to low rainfall environments are now available BUT sound crop and paddock selection along with correct and timely agronomic management practices are still essential to reduce production risks... It is important that growers follow standard pulse management guidelines for the crop and variety chosen... Lentil and chickpea growers in particular can benefit from on farm storage as it can assist in attaining the highest price for grain in some seasons and allow crops with poor quality issues (poor colour, wrinkled seed) or contaminants to be harvested quickly and stored until appropriate cleaning and marketing can occur...

Trials to identify low-rainfall canola lines.. The GRDC has now funded a three-year project to support canola selection for low-rainfall areas... Despite the variability in drought stress experienced at Condobolin, the 'soft' growing conditions at Minnipa and the lack of a site in Victoria, a number of entries were identified as promising for low-rainfall environments...

Barley with genetically unique sources of adaptation to the low rainfall environments has been evaluated using lines from the International Centre for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA)... Barley lines from ICARDA have shown potential for the improvement of adaptation, with adaptive features derived from wild barley and primitive barley landraces, and selection for yield and associated adaptive traits in drought prone environments with soils of low fertility... The germplasm and information gathered in this project will benefit industry since the project has had a focus on the improvement of adaptation as related to yield and physical grain quality...

What I am suggesting is that we start to talk about the total rainfall over a given area and then confine our planting and fertilization to 20% to 30% of the total area... (More on this in "Blue sky thinking) I believe that a 25% yield increase would be easily achievable given the absence of frost risk and the resulting ability to have our grain crops filling in soft conditions... Stuart Barden Metainer Pty Ltd 02 68 479267 02 68 479269 stuartbarden@bigpond.com The objective of my study was to identify techniques that have potential to add value to Australian grain-growers who grow crops in lower rainfall areas around Australia...

Field work was carried out using rain-out shelters and irrigation facilities at the Department of Agriculture and Food WA's (DAFWA) Merredin Research Station (MRS) (2008 and 2009)... The distribution of rainfall had the greatest (but inconsistent) effect on yield, followed by management (row spacing)... In the long term, genetic improvements using specific traits to increase yield under dry conditions may deliver greater benefits to growers...

A brief word on choosing varieties.. The CL Plus varieties represent a both a 5 to 10% yield improvement on JNZ and STL and tolerance to the full rate of Intervix from 3 leaf onwards... The aim of the paper is to assist advisors and growers in making appropriate canola variety decisions by providing an appraisal of the varieties most suited to each region...
