When Doug and Roma Parker decided to plant wheat fence-to-fence last year to recover from two successive droughts, it was still an easy decision to keep their trial paddock of perennial pasture - despite their 2200-hectare Mingenew property 'Pri-inga' having been destocked... Doug says the 15ha of perennial pasture (grass), resulting from their involvement with the GRDC-supported Grain & Graze program, was preserved to rebuild their livestock operations and restore some enterprise diversity... Doug says his grazing records show perennial pasture allows a higher stocking rate than annual pasture species, and after establishing the pasture in the first year the growth thereafter is "all profit"...
