The Environment Conventional cropping systems in the Central USA have low levels of biological diversity and rely heavily on synthetic fertilisers and herbicides... An experiment run over 10 years by Texas Tech University USA, has shown that an integrated crop/forage/livestock system compared with a cotton monoculture has decreased nitrogen use by 40% and lowered irrigation water use by 25% whilst maintaining similar profitability between the two systems...
