About 200 breeding lines were exchanged between the three countries to improve resistance to the diseases blackleg, white rust and sclerotinia and also tolerance to pod shattering, drought and high temperatures, plus the traits required for canola-quality mustard... During two exchanges, 106 breeding lines of Brassica napus and 104 of B. juncea were exchanged between the three countries... All countries will benefit, with India and China seeking to replace their traditional rapeseed and mustard cultivars with Australian canola-quality (low erucic acid, low glucosinolate) B. napus varieties," Associate Professor Salisbury says...

For example the spill-ins with germplasm arise through our collaborations in wheat and pulses with the publically-funded centres like CIMMYT, ICARDA and ICRISAT, and in canola we have an excellent example in the private sector with Canola Breeders WA and.. Falling public investments now are a worry, especially as our private ones in R and D are low (but increasing somewhat)... Recruitment and education of new agricultural scientists and farm decision makers is an important part of competitiveness, something about which time doesn't permit more discussion, except to say I think WA does pretty well at this...

" Attachment 2 Project DAQ00015: Crop improvement of grain sorghum in Australia - core breeding Details of germplasm licensed... Some of the lines were licensed to multiple breeding programs with a total of 467 licenses being granted... Due to the long lead time of breeding processes all of the crosses that produced these lines were initiated prior to the commencement of DAQ00015 and fall under previous breeding projects for IP purposes (see Attachment 1 for commercialisation details)...

Western Australian growers storing grain for seed or sale are encouraged to attend regional workshops following the detection and eradication of grain storage insects with strong phosphine resistance in the Central Midlands region... "The insects were eradicated by a team led by DAFWA entomologist Rob Emery and grain storage consultant Chris Newman, as part of this project supported by the GRDC and the Plant Biosecurity Cooperative Research Centre (PBCRC)," he said... "Phosphine resistance occurs through using phosphine in seed and storage silos that are not adequately sealed to meet the Australian standard," he said...

The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) will change its focus in barley crop investment, giving the commercial sector access to important genetic material developed by the outgoing southern barley breeding program, to enable the best possible advancements in variety development... Dr Betzner said the key focus for GRDC now was to work with the University of Adelaide to make sure that the right licensing framework is put into place to determine access rights and pave the way for the best possible advancements in variety traits... We hope to be in a position to call for expressions of interest in the near future."..

Webcast heralds new age for industry debate.. The panel, chaired by the national editor of ABC Rural, Leigh Radford, and including GRDC managing director John Harvey, discussed how breeding could overcome the 'tough nuts' facing Australia's wheat growers - frost, drought and protection from disease... The rodent panel included three members of the National Mouse Management Working Group - Dr Rohan Rainbow (GRDC manager crop protection), Dr Simon Humphrys (commercialisation manager, Invasive Animals Cooperative Research Centre) and Andrew Polkinghorne (South Australian Mouse Working Party) - and addressed an increase in mouse numbers in an area covering more than a fifth of south-east Australia's cropping area...
