The result confirms the conclusions of another experiment comparing crops growing after pastures conducted in a wetter sequence of seasons... The expectation is based on results showing that pastures containing the perennial grasses phalaris and cocksfoot had higher yields than those based on lucerne... If pastures containing perennial pastures are more widely adopted, the expected economic benefit will be a yield advantage of about 10% over lucerne-dominant pastures...

Finally to the numerous farmers, business people and researchers I met around the world that were also very generous with their time and knowledge, thank you... It is widely regarded that cactus is high yielding, highly palatable and a readily available source of carbohydrates but lacks crude protein and crude fibre to get the best performance out of cactus it needs to be supplemented with a cheap source of fibre and protein (Nefzaoui, Salem, Salem, 2000, p512 - 516)... Develop a farming operation where a normal budget would rely on less than 50% of traditional farming system to generate the income reducing exposure to financial risk in droughts...

I firmly believe that farmers are in the business of producing multiple commodities not just wool or wheat but are custodians of the environment not just for themselves but for society as a whole... As my knowledge expanded and my business increased I began to pass on that knowledge to farmers in an effort to encourage them to plant natives on farms... In the past we have focused as farmers on production and maximising yields...

Gatton Panic (Megathyrsus maximus) and Rhodes grass (Chloris gayana) pastures appear to have good toleranance to many herbicides commonly used in wheat, lupin and canola production e.g. Achieve , atrazine, Decision , Jaguar , simazine and the knockdown herbicide glyphosate (540 ai) at 1 L/ha... The number of dead and live plants was also assessed in Gatton Panic plots on 4 September... Herbicide treatments were applied across entire plots (10 x 15 m) and damage assessed on that part of each plot (3 x 15 m) not sown to crop...

By recognising and responding to whole-farm and management aspects at the farm scale, EverCrop has identified opportunities to increase profitability, resilience and environmental outcomes in Australian cropping regions... New on-farm evaluation sites will be used to measure and evaluate erosion risks under lucerne/chicory/perennial grass; perennial/annual pasture/crop; grazed/lightly grazed/ungrazed; and contrasting soil types... To assess the tolerance of sub tropical grasses (panic, signal and Rhodes grass) to a wide range of knockdown and in-crop herbicides, over the winter dormancy period... The difference became less noticeable with time as the Rhodes grass began active growth (sent out runners) about a month earlier than the panic or signal grass... Although the sub tropical grasses did not appear to grow over the winter period (Jul-Aug), these results would indicate that they are by no means completely dormant...
