Wild relatives of chickpea among the genus Cicer have many valuable agronomic traits crucial for improvement of the cultivar... Methods developed for wide crosses with C. pinnatifidum at ICRISAT, India (Mallikarjuna, 1999) were transferred and adapted for crosses between local chickpea cultivars, in Canada and Australia, and C. pinnatifidum... Embryo rescue has good potential as the key to unlocking the treasure chest of distant wild relatives for chickpea improvement...

Peer-to-peer learning pushes success in extension.. After travelling through North America to look at the US and Canadian systems, which seemed to rely less on information sharing by growers and more of a top-down approach to dissemination of information, Chris visited Ireland and Europe where research and extension is largely privatised... The number of dairy discussion groups in Ireland has gone from 50 to 500 and Chris believes he understands why it has been so successful: "Benchmarking is an important tool," he says...

Sheep numbers can be reduced quickly in times of dry, but rapid increase of numbers still appears to elude us in 2010... Sheep fertility, fecundity, and lamb survival are very important traits to rebuild the industry and set it up for future production this should not be at the expense of finding better adapted and better performing animals within the current flock... Much of the growth of a ewe lamb at this point has been a function of maternal environment very likely that the adult ewe had longer seasonality and was able to join at the beginning of the joining period...

An understanding of the various factors that combine to drive cost effective spray timing will be a key focus for farm advisers attending a practical cereal foliar disease workshop in Temora... The Grains Research and Development Corporation-supported two-day workshop in March will discuss the cutting edge of cereal disease management, enabling advisers to pass on the latest knowledge and insights to their grain-growing clients... The small group workshop will cover issues including: relating cereal growth stages and disease epidemiology to spray decisions; using stem dissection to identify when key leaves for protection are emerging; the impact of environment and day degrees on crop and disease development; understanding where new and old fungicides fit; and identifying key intervention points for disease management in cereals...

For many years, Australian and New Zealand scientists worked together closely to identify the cereal rust pathotypes (strains or races) that occurred in each country... Support from the GRDC, the Plant Biosecurity Cooperative Research Centre (PBCRC) and the Foundation for Arable Research (FAR) has enabled researchers at the Australian Cereal Rust Control Program (ACRCP), Plant & Food Research (PFR) and FAR to join forces in gaining understanding of the cereal rust pathotypes that now occur in New Zealand and how these relate to those in Australia... Findings from the preliminary research are consistent with earlier research showing strong evidence that cereal rust inoculum is regularly exchanged between the two countries, mostly from Australia to New Zealand on prevailing winds, but also, less frequently, by some unknown mechanism in the opposite direction...
