Early work on canola focused on weed management strategies including the breeding of herbicide tolerant canola varieties such as triazine tolerant (TT) varieties which now account for an estimated 90% of canola grown in WA... Research is still being conducted to determine the effect of these viruses on the yield of canola in WA. European work has found seed yield losses of 10-15% associated with this virus disease in canola... The amount of air passed through the grain is measured in litres per second per tonne and varies depending on the particular aeration strategy...

DAFWA is increasing its testing of mites for resistance to organophosphate insecticides, as well as for resistance to synthetic pyrethroids.. Growers who notice any instances of insecticides failing to control redlegged earth mites (RLEM) this season are encouraged to arrange for the pests to be tested... Department of Agriculture and Food (DAFWA) entomologist Svetlana Micic encouraged growers to notify her if they suspected RLEM had survived registered rates of insecticides, so arrangements could be made to have samples of mites tested for resistance...

DNA helps explain mite adaptation.. Predicting the response of RLEM ( Halotydeus destructor ) to climate change was the focus of his GRDC-sponsored PhD, recently completed at the University of Melbourne... Understanding and predicting the responses should help develop management strategies that can take into account shifts in the frequency of outbreaks and persistence of pests, as well as changes to the interaction between species - especially beneficial species that might provide biocontrol options...
