Epidemics of yellow spot develop when susceptible varieties are sown into infected stubble where frequent and extended periods of wet weather prevail at temperatures between 10 and 30 C. Optimum temperatures are between 15 and 25 C... Given that timing is the most important factor in fungicidal control, the onus is on growers and agronomists to monitor crops closely... In 2010, the disease was observed causing a leaf blight in barley and in durum wheat in the field...

Crown rot remains a threat under irrigation.. Cotton growers moving into irrigated grain production are being warned to manage the damaging cereal disease crown rot, which can cause major yield losses when moisture stress occurs during grain fill... Losses to crown rot can be dramatically reduced in irrigated crops by a range of management options and carefully considering the scheduling of water to limit moisture stress during grain fill."..

2010 provided the most favourable conditions for the development of foliar diseases for 12 years which generated epidemics of yellow spot in wheat and spot form net blotch and leaf rust in barley... It is essential that an integrated approach of cultural, genetic and chemical methods is implemented to maximize control and minimize losses... To minimize inoculum, there should be no green barley plants growing in the region for 4 to 6 weeks before sowing - the longer, the better...

NVT adopts grower approach to disease management.. Mr Bedggood says if the NVT are not treated for disease it misrepresents the potential of some varieties, especially if a commercial variety has become susceptible since its release and is currently widely grown... "To ensure uniformity of treatments, the NVT program likes to sow all seed bare [untreated], as supplied by the plant breeder, so we use a fertiliser at sowing which has been amended with fungicide," Mr Bedggood says...

Experts assess rust outlook for 2014 the Rust Bust (logo).. The researchers present were unanimous in their belief that growing resistant varieties remains the front-line defence to reduce the risks of rust infection... For growers who choose to plant susceptible (S) and very susceptible (VS) varieties, it is essential to develop a rust-management plan, which outlines immediate actions that should be taken if there is an outbreak," Dr Hollaway said...
