"Now is the time - before harvest - to record where slugs have been present this year, regardless of whether they caused damage, as it can take more than one season for slugs to reach damaging levels in a paddock... "Discussed at all meetings was the need for alternative controls for slugs in WA, as burning and tillage only controls the reticulated slug," GRDC RCSN coordinator Julianne Hill said... GRDC supported surveys conducted by DAFWA have found that most slugs in WA crops are the black keeled slug or the reticulated slug...

In response to renewed slug pressures in HRZ after the mid to late 2000's drought period a survey has been initiated to determine the extent of problems and validate factors likely to lead to increased chances of crop losses due to slugs at establishment (Table 2)... The trial supports previous research recommending the application of baits immediately after sowing to protect emerging seedlings... Bait does kill juveniles that are active, but invasion from the soil and new hatchlings quickly return population levels to greater than the initial population the common observation baits select for younger populations...

The evaluation of slug management strategies - a "fast track project" instigated by the GRDC's Regional Cropping Solutions Network in the HRZ - has been conducted by Southern Farming Systems in the Western District of Victoria... SFS chief executive officer Jon Midwood said the project aimed to demonstrate and evaluate a range of management strategies that could effectively reduce slug damage to crops at emergence and during establishment... Mr Midwood said the project involved three trial and demonstration sites at Inverleigh, Hamilton and Skipton and that treatments included in the trials initially aimed to include a range of cultural practices and chemical options (baits), but with the very dry summer of 2012-13, some of the cultural controls became impractical...

slugs are a major pest of crops globally, and have emerged as a serious pest for australian grain growers in recent decades... Slugs will eat all parts of a crop plant seedlings are the most vulnerable and this is the time when major economic losses can occur... Current research cultivation is effective in reducing slug is investigating this further, but preliminary numbers as it destroys their habitat results suggest that a minimum of 250,000 this is not an option in zero-till operations bait points per hectare may be required...
