The revegetation of farmland to improve the biodiversity of the cropping landscape, and ultimately lift the grainbelt's long-term sustainability, is shifting up a gear through a three-year study into the real needs of threatened flora and fauna species... By responding to the needs of these 'focal species' it not only allows a more strategic approach to revegetation, but hopefully creates an ecological umbrella under which the needs of many other species are also covered... Armed with the information, a new project - a joint Land and Water Australia/ CSIRO initiative - is moving beyond a single focal species like the small woodland birds, to identifying the requirements of a range of fauna, such as insects and reptiles; to see at what levels of revegetation a more complex and more viable web of life begins to interlink...

The importance of protecting remnant vegetation is now enshrined in land clearing regulation and there is also a growing recognition that native vegetation can support ecosystem services that provide benefits to agricultural production... The projected movement of high intensity cropping into new bio-regions in the HRZ is likely to challenge valuable biodiversity assets that currently exist in these areas... Finally approaches for integrating cropping into the HRZ that maximise biodiversity conservation and ecosystem service benefits will be developed...

Genebank curator takes breeders deeper into the gene pool.. "Pre-breeders who have been searching for traits for years - including genetic Holy Grails like crown rot resistance and frost tolerance - are starting to knock my door down with requests to apply FIGS technology," Dr Street says... The conservation role relies on a definition of 'genetic diversity' that is based on generic plant characters that have little relevance to breeders...

I firmly believe that farmers are in the business of producing multiple commodities not just wool or wheat but are custodians of the environment not just for themselves but for society as a whole... As my knowledge expanded and my business increased I began to pass on that knowledge to farmers in an effort to encourage them to plant natives on farms... In the past we have focused as farmers on production and maximising yields...
