The aim of the project was to enhance capability in marker validation and implementation in the Western Australian (WA) barley breeding program, leading to more rapid development of improved varieties... Markers were used to: accelerate backcrossing; inter-cross various target traits; improve genetic value of doubled haploid (DH) lines by screening donor plants; and improve genetic gain by post-screening DH lines... Molecular markers were used to: (1) accelerate back-crossing target traits into elite genetic backgrounds; (2) inter-cross various target traits; (3) improve genetic value of DH lines by pre-screening donor plants for DH production; and (4) improve genetic gain by post-screening DH lines before field testing...

Gene editing dawns as the next breeding step-change.. Using China's exploration of gene-editing technology as an example, he said investment in clustered regularly-interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) had the potential to transform the way we genetically modify grain crops to lift productivity... Illustrating the potential for this gene-editing tool, he said that in the future CRISPR could be used to "snip" the gene for cystic fibrosis carried by at least 14 of the 350 delegates attending the conference (one in 25 people are said to carry the cystic fibrosis gene)...

There is market demand for the production of Buloke in all Port Zones, although the demand is seasonally dependent in Geraldton and eastern parts of the Kwinana Port Zone (Table 3)... There is market demand for the production of Vlamingh in the Kwinana (seasonal in eastern areas), Albany and Esperance Port Zones, but no market demand in the Geraldton Port Zone (Table 3)... If accredited, Grange will offer growers improvements in agronomic performance (grain yield, grain quality and disease resistance) over the established malting varieties Baudin, Buloke and Gairdner...

Of the new varieties there is already established market demand for Commander barley, but Bass, Granger, Henley and Scope are undergoing or beginning international market development... Bass is being assessed for export as grain, export as malt and for the shochu market in Japan... Demand is decreasing in the Kwinana Port Zone for export as malt, but there is stable demand for export as grain from the Albany and Esperance Port Zones...

Thank you to National Variety Trials (NVT), the NVT trial co-operators and breeding organisations for their cooperation in providing data... There is still some re-focusing required to maximise the opportunities for growers and maximise the opportunities for the trade... Varietal resistance to BYD and CYD does not reduce the need to spray for aphids to prevent yield loss from feeding damage once they reach threshold levels in the crop (50% of tillers with 15 or more aphids)...
