Buloke maintained its popularity in 2012, with a large increase in the popularity of Hindmarsh and a large decrease in the popularity of Baudin and Vlamingh... Hindmarsh is a very good variety and is the best alternative to malting varieties in environments where the yield potential is below 2.5 t/ha and/or there is a low expectation of delivering malt grade barley... Overall, the big winner was Hindmarsh, increasing in acreage by nearly 120,000 ha in 2012 and pipping both Gairdner and Vlamingh in total acreage...

"If disease levels don't break down over the summer, crops will be at risk next year, especially if growers select new varieties that aren't disease-tolerant," said Mr Sonogan, who is also an agronomic consultant based at Swan Hill (Victoria)... PreDicta B samples are processed weekly from February to mid May ( less frequently at other times of the year ) and tests are for most of the soil-borne diseases of cereals and some pulse crops, including CCN, crown rot, rhizoctonia root rot, take-all, Pratylenchus thornei, Pratylenchus neglectus, stem nematode and blackspot... Having examined the roots of crops during the 2014 growing season, Mr Sonogan said he observed non-typical expression of CCN disease this year...

There is market demand for the production of Buloke in all Port Zones, although the demand is seasonally dependent in Geraldton and eastern parts of the Kwinana Port Zone (Table 3)... There is market demand for the production of Vlamingh in the Kwinana (seasonal in eastern areas), Albany and Esperance Port Zones, but no market demand in the Geraldton Port Zone (Table 3)... If accredited, Grange will offer growers improvements in agronomic performance (grain yield, grain quality and disease resistance) over the established malting varieties Baudin, Buloke and Gairdner...

Setting course to discover barley yield treasure.. On average, Compass has performed 10 per cent higher in yield than Commander , the current leading benchmark malting variety across National Variety Trials... "What we're seeing is that Compass gets into the late reproductive phase a lot earlier than Commander in most environments and sowing dates and does not abort as many potential grains," Mr Porker said...

Through funding from the Grains Research and Development Corporation, University of Adelaide and Playford Memorial Trust, Kenton Porker is aiming to understand the developmental pattern contributing to an increase in the yield performance of Compass across a broad range of environments... "If you grow these varieties under really long days, Commander will flower earlier than Compass because it is progressed by day length much more rapidly," Mr Porker says... "What we're seeing is that Compass gets into the late reproductive phase a lot earlier than Commander in most environments and sowing dates and does not abort as many potential grains," Mr Porker said...
