Buloke maintained its popularity in 2012, with a large increase in the popularity of Hindmarsh and a large decrease in the popularity of Baudin and Vlamingh... Hindmarsh is a very good variety and is the best alternative to malting varieties in environments where the yield potential is below 2.5 t/ha and/or there is a low expectation of delivering malt grade barley... Overall, the big winner was Hindmarsh, increasing in acreage by nearly 120,000 ha in 2012 and pipping both Gairdner and Vlamingh in total acreage...

Net form net blotch continues to cause problems in many barley crops... A particular concern with NFNB is the continuing rapid evolution of virulence in this pathogen with Keel, Maritime , Fleet and Oxford showing rapid falls in resistance rating in recent years... Extensive testing of isolates of the fungus taken across SA in recent years has shown that none of the strains tested have combined virulence on Fleet and Maritime so in some areas Maritime may have appeared as quite resistant...

There is market demand for the production of Buloke in all Port Zones, although the demand is seasonally dependent in Geraldton and eastern parts of the Kwinana Port Zone (Table 3)... There is market demand for the production of Vlamingh in the Kwinana (seasonal in eastern areas), Albany and Esperance Port Zones, but no market demand in the Geraldton Port Zone (Table 3)... If accredited, Grange will offer growers improvements in agronomic performance (grain yield, grain quality and disease resistance) over the established malting varieties Baudin, Buloke and Gairdner...

Thank you to National Variety Trials (NVT), the NVT trial co-operators and breeding organisations for their cooperation in providing data... There is still some re-focusing required to maximise the opportunities for growers and maximise the opportunities for the trade... Varietal resistance to BYD and CYD does not reduce the need to spray for aphids to prevent yield loss from feeding damage once they reach threshold levels in the crop (50% of tillers with 15 or more aphids)...

Varietal resistance to BYD and CYD does not reduce the need to spray for aphids to prevent yield loss from feeding damage once they reach threshold levels in the crop (50% of tillers with 15 or more aphids)... On farm reactions of v differ if the pathotype/s present differ to the pathotype used in testing...
