WESTERN, NORTHERN AND SOUTHERN REGIONS QUANTIFY THE RISK, PADDOCK BY PADDOCK Blackleg can cause severe yield loss, but can be successfully managed... If you have: high or increasing levels of blackleg in your crop (from monitoring disease levels each year); used the management practices outlined in Step 3; and sown cultivars from the same resistance group in close proximity (within 2km) for three or more years, then sow a cultivar from a different resistance group (see page 4 - Blackleg Resistance Groups)... To facilitate the process, all cultivars have been placed into groups (A to H) based on their resistance genes inTable 3...

Fencelines and paddock margins represent a large number of situations where cases of glyphosate-resistant annual ryegrass are occurring... Integrated weed management must be practiced for all weed control operations... KeY POINts employing glyphosate as the only method to control fenceline weeds will quickly result in herbicide resistance developing...

The research has been conducted across regional NSW to determine if new and existing varieties of canola vary in tolerance to commonly used herbicides... The sensitivity of the variety is summarised, using the following symbols based on the yield responses across all trials: - not tested or insufficient data no significant yield reductions at recommended rates or higher than recommended rates in 2+ trials N (narrow margin) significant yield reductions at higher than recommended rate in 1+ trials, but not at recommended rate x% yield reduction (warning) significant yield reduction at recommended rate in 1 trial only x-y% yield reductions (warning) significant yield reductions at recommended rate in 2+ trials.. It must be emphasised that crop tolerance and yield responses to herbicides are strongly influenced by seasonal conditions...

Recent trials have shown that spring sowing of winter canola can provide increased returns compared to a summer fallow... Spring-sown winter canola at Dunkeld pictured just before grazing in summer 2011 (left) and at flowering in spring 2012 (right).. For a winter variety, this means plants can be sown in spring, grazed during summer and then grow and recover in the lead-up to winter...
