The Lower Eyre Peninsula survey showed most paddocks had internal blackleg infection levels below 10% unlikely to suffer a yield or oil content penalty... Current varieties have a number of resistance genes if blackleg overcomes one resistance gene, other resistance genes remain effective and so the crops should not become completely susceptible... Final grain yield after slashing was similar in all varieties (about 0.8 t/ha average), except CB1206 (0.2 t/ha)...

Adapting our current practices and varieties to focus on managing the three key phases of crown rot (survival, infection and yield loss) will determine the impact this disease has on your crops in the future... Yield achievement in the presence of crown rot (Figure 2) is perhaps a more useful means of comparing varieties rather than the extent of yield loss associated with infection (Figure 1) as a variety with the smallest yield loss may not always be the highest yield achiever... The agronomy of durum production has not been extensively evaluated in such a western environment due to limited commercial production in the region primarily based around concerns over the high susceptibility of this crop to crown rot...

Photo: GRDC Northern Panellists inspect GRDC-funded winter crop trials in northern NSW... The checklist gives growers a comprehensive 'to do list' that will help growers maximise the potential that each year offers so they will be satisfied when harvest rolls around and yield and protein levels come in... Rotations - top of the list is the selection of crops and varieties as rotations, summer and winter, have become essential to our farming system in terms of controlling weeds and diseases...

Bayer CropScience has undertaken extensive research in Australia that demonstrates how the seed treatment insecticide imidacloprid, available as Hombre (tebuconazole + imidacloprid) and Zorro (triadimenol + imidacloprid) can be used to improve the yield of wheat, barley and oats... The responses that can be seen include an increase in the growth rate or an increase in the green colour of the plants compared to the untreated plants... Since 2003, in excess of 42 research and demonstration trials have been carried out across Australia to qualify and quantify the benefits that Hombre and Zorro can offer in the production of cereals...

Little work has focused on the effect of varying plant population and the carryover effect on soil water available for the critical crop development stages of flowering and grain fill which dictates the extent of yield loss to crown rot... In 2009, five replicated trials were conducted across northern NSW, using the four main durum varieties in the region to assess if the impact of crown rot could be minimised by varying plant populations and variety selection... Plant, tiller and head number per m2 were measured in each plot...

Optimising barley yields and quality in No-Till farming systems.. X Highest yields generally occur with row spacing narrower than 300 mm and the benefits of adopting wider row spacing need to be evaluated against the costs (in terms of lower yields)... At one site, there was a strong correlation between the variety ranking in terms of trifluralin effects on plant establishment and the ranking of varieties in terms of the effect of wide row spacing on plant establishment, suggesting the observed "tolerances" are more related to (unidentified) seed quality issues rather than genetic differences between the varieties...

Seeding rates theory holds water for repellent soils.. Topsoil water repellence was measured at all sites using the Molarity of Ethanol Droplet (MED) test... "At Yealering, the use of soil wetters increased the plant numbers over the control by at least 18 per cent at the 60kg/ha seed rate and 22 per cent at the 120klg/ha seed rate," he said...

Identical to Herald strand medic but with the addition of excellent tolerance to SU herbicides applied 4 to 12 months before sowing... Effect of SU herbicide applied in January and February at 0, 50 & 100% of suggested summer rates, (metsulfuron methyl - 3.5 & 7g/ha of product triasulfuron - 9 & 18 g/ha) on the dry matter production of Angel and Herald sown four months later at a low rainfall alkaline soil site on Eyre Peninsula... The options for controlling weeds in the pasture phase for Angel are essentially the same as for other medics...
