SARDI's Dr Alan McKay inspects root systems affected by Rhizoctonia... "We are not completely sure why, but suspect that the break crops might not have been completely grass-free, as grasses and cereals are the main hosts of Rhizoctonia," Dr McKay says... Dr McKay says early indications are that where the 2015 season was particularly poor in some areas of Victoria, many growers will be planting wheat on wheat in 2016 to recover some of the inputs from the previous season...

Early sowing pay-off rests on variety choice.. Whistler shows promise for early sowing at Doodlakine and Wickepin, WA.. " because of the poor adaptation of EGA Wedgetail to SA, even if sown in early to mid-April it is unlikely to yield as well as Mace when Mace is sown in its optimal window," he says...

Matt Curtis in a paddock he sowed to Wedgetail in January 2015 to try and get some cover on a sand hill... Matt first sowed Wedgetail in March 2011 on the back of 500 millimetres of summer rain - an extraordinary event - and some encouragement from Mallee Sustainable Farming agronomist Michael Moodie... Matt has already sown about 20ha Wedgetail this year to cover up a sand hill, but he will terminate it in autumn and sow the paddock to vetch...

N2O emissions from the soil are a by-product of the process of nitrification, and one of the end-products of the process of denitrification... In the cases of wheat and sorghum sowing in 2010, rainfall immediately after sowing led to significant rates of N2O loss from the applied fertiliser N. For example, in the 5 days after sowing wheat (with fertiliser applied), 139 g of N2O-N/ha was emitted from the soil... These losses of N2O from cropping soils are significant, with the N2O emitted directly from the soil accounting for about 45% of the total greenhouse gas emissions coming from the entire operation of growing, fertilising, spraying and harvesting a wheat crop...

In some areas, growers have received more than 200mm since January and a few have capitalised on this moisture by sowing crops from the beginning of April... In response to this year's seasonal conditions, the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) is funding new trials to test the validity of sowing crops very early to take advantage of higher than average rainfall at the start of the year... The trials, focusing on a range of varieties, will test the validity of sowing crops early to take advantage of higher than average summer and autumn rainfall in this region...

Conservation Agriculture, Moving Beyond Adoption' is a collection of grower experiences and leading research... A proportion of growers interviewed as a part of this project believe there are benefits in using CTF... The adoption of CTF is not quick or easy and the case studies demonstrate the time and effort required to produce results, particularly if a grower is coming from a background of already compacted ground...
