The new Gunnedah population on the left looks healthy, showing it has a much higher level of resistance compared to the sample in the centre which is known to be susceptible, and the original resistant Moree population on the right... The world's third case of glyphosate resistant liverseed grass has been confirmed in northern New South Wales, seven years after the first two cases were confirmed from east of Moree... "While this is only the third confirmed case of glyphosate resistant liverseed grass in seven years, it comes from a new area and has a much higher level of resistance than previous populations," stated Tony Cook, Technical Specialist (Weeds) with NSW Department of Primary Industries...

Mr Congreve said planning a coordinated and effective strategy to control in-crop and fallow weeds, particularly problem grassy weeds, would help growers maximise crop yields while delaying the development of resistance on the farm... The second webinar on December 10 will address the latest research on barnyard grass management through the experience of respected industry experts Tony Cook from NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) and Michael Widderick and Jeff Werth from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF Queensland) who have been extensively studying the ecology, evolution of resistance and management of barnyard grass in fallow and summer crops... Caption: Mark Congreve, Senior Consultant ICAN says planning a coordinated and effective in-crop strategy to control weeds, particularly problem grassy weeds, would help growers maximise crop yields while reducing the likelihood of developing a herbicide resistance problem on-farm...

A range of options is needed for effective summer weed control.. All these summer weeds have populations that are either resistant to glyphosate or naturally tolerant of glyphosate (such as feathertop Rhodes grass).. The weeds in question - awnless barnyard grass, feathertop Rhodes grass (FTR), windmill grass, liverseed grass, sowthistle and the notorious fleabane - are all a problem in summer fallows: "And all have populations either resistant to glyphosate or naturally tolerant to glyphosate (such as FTR)...

The work showed that Touchdown Broadacre Tm (TD- BA) offered ~96% control but another formulation of a Group M herbicide at comparable use rates only controlled 10% at 52 days after application (DAA)... A group M herbicide @ 2lt/ha followed by a double knock of Sprayseed Tm offered moderate improvement in control (61% control @ 52 DAA)... The summary of the results of this trial is shown in Graph 1 below...

Target young small barnyard grass and if necessary treat different soil types as weed emergence dictates... Often the barnyard grass on the lighter soil was stressing before the spray was applied... The use of the "double knock" strategy, following an initial glyphosate with a Group L chemical (paraquat, diquat), is now required in the fallow sprays to control the barnyard grass in these paddocks...

At present five weeds are confirmed glyphosate-resistant: barnyard grass, liverseed grass, windmill grass, annual ryegrass and flaxleaf fleabane... A fleabane module has also been added, but may need to be modified when the genetics of resistance is determined... The project has provided the growers and advisers of the northern region with a new suite of chemical and non-chemical tactics that have been integrated into strategies to prevent or manage the important issues of glyphosate-resistant grasses and multiple-resistant wild oats...
