In a recent survey by Fleet and Gill (2008), farmers in low rainfall districts in South Australia and Victoria reported increasing incidence of barley grass in their crops... Our research has clearly shown higher levels of seed dormancy in barley grass and brome grass populations collected from cropping fields than those from non-crop situations such as long-term pastures, fence-lines or roadsides... Results of the study conclusively showed the adaptive value of selection for increased seed dormancy in cropping habitats...

Scald is more likely to be a problem when a susceptible barley variety is sown into infected stubble from a previous crop or when infected barley grass is present... Scald can be managed using an integrated approach that includes avoiding susceptible varieties, delaying early sowing, using seed dressings and not sowing into infected crop residues... Scald can be effectively controlled using an integrated approach encompassing variety selection, cultural practices, time of sowing, seed treatment and foliar fungicides...

H. marinum is widely referred to as sea barley grass around the world, and H. hystrixis known as Mediterranean barley grass... Conditions that favour germination and establishment The seed of common sowthistle can germinate at temperatures in the range 5 C to 35 C. Germination is ultimately determined by moisture availability, as a moist environment is preferred... There is a high proportion of seedling emergence from shallow seed sources, whereas more deeply buried seeds remain dormant and long-lived with a half life estimated at 10 years...
