In the first year the trial consisted of four crops (lupin, canola, wheat and barley) planted into a pasture paddock along with self sown strips of pasture... Plant densities and damage by invertebrates was assessed at 14 and 28 days post-seeding... We observed that invertebrate species that are influenced by stubble retention practices such as bronzed field beetle, earwigs, were in higher numbers under crop residues than where stubble was absent...

MITEY USEFUL GUIDE: The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) has released a Back Pocket Guide to assist growers in correctly identifying crop mites... Cesar entomologist Dr Paul Umina, who collaborated with GRDC in developing the guide, says mites are small in size and often go unnoticed, but are an important pest group attacking Australian grain crops. ".. The guide is designed to assist growers in identifying the most commonly observed mite species found in the southern and western cropping regions," Dr Umina said...

They are small in size and often go unnoticed mites are one of the most important pest groups attacking Australian grain crops... There are only a few mite species considered major crop pests in Australia... Unfortunately all the mites are relatively similar in appearance and can co-exist in the same area...

Our surveys have shown that WCMs are typically found wherever wheat is grown... The distribution of balaustium and bryobia mites has been completed throughout southern Australia (WA, SA, Vic and NSW)... The results suggest that omethoate and chlorpyrifos will be the most effective broad-spectrum pesticides for control of bryobia mites, although problems are likely to occur for other registered pesticides...

Reliance on a narrow range of chemicals to control pests leads to problems in resurgence, secondary pests and the development of pesticide resistance... We will expand upon work performed under GRDC project "developing and demonstrating the role of alternative chemistries and integrated management for crop establishment pests" (project UM00033), which is investigating the distribution and level of resistance in redlegged earth mites... Laboratory tests have shown that these mite species and lucerne flea differ in their tolerance to pesticides application rates for one species may not be effective against another species...
