Key pointS Auto boom height can help to maintain correct nozzle height above the target, which improves the evenness of the spray deposit and reduces spray drift through excessive boom height... electronic auto boom height controllers require regular calibration and may not be suited to all boom designs... types of auto height boom systems Mechanical: This may be as simple as a wheel (ideally with suspension) mounted onto the boom to prevent the boom from striking the ground...

Sprayer setup and using good quality water are critical to ensure full rates of glyphosate are getting to the weeds... Dr Boutsalis says a common reason for poor weed control when using glyphosate is herbicide resistance, ranging from weak resistance to strong resistance... Plants with weak resistance are often controlled with maximum label rates of glyphosate, Dr Boutsalis says, but relying on a herbicide-only option will develop resistance to very high rates...

Grain growers in the southern cropping region are being offered practical advice on the correct use of auto boom spray height control systems... The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) has developed a Spray Height Control Fact Sheet which provides useful information on the types of auto height boom systems available, the importance of maintaining optimum height, set up considerations and calibration requirements... The Fact Sheet states that when properly adjusted, auto boom height control systems can allow the operator to focus on monitoring other machine functions, which improves spray accuracy and reduces operator fatigue...

"The research is investigating a range of spray application issues, including the best combination of nozzles, spray pressures and pesticide formulations to minimise drift and optimise efficacy," Dr Young said... "The GRDC is funding research on spray drift reduction technology because we want to ensure any new buffer zone requirements are based on the latest technology and, importantly, Australian conditions," Dr Young said... Dr Young said the focus of the new training project would be to continue to raise awareness of spraying best practice and to increase the number of skilled people who can provide quality information and training to growers...

In order to maximise the benefits of fallow sprays, Dow AgroSciences' Rob Buttimor says they need to be managed to the same degree as in-crop sprays so growers do not end up with a mess in the spray tank... "Growers using 2 percent AMS in soft water are effectively wasting their money," Mr Buttimor says... By adding lots of other ions to the spray tank in the form of hard water or soluble liquid herbicides, it neutralizes these charges and the oil droplets can come together to form large oil droplets, oily gels or general glug that will float to the top or sink to the bottom of the spray tank...
