Two farm examples are used: Farmer C and Farmer D. The only difference between the two farms is Farmer C had 100% heavy land after purchase and Farmer D had 50% heavy land and 50% light land after purchase.. Each farm in each district will have a different decile break even... I have observed farmers on Eyre Peninsula who have successfully managed the run of dry seasons often have a simple 'rule of thumb' for the business side of the farm...

We have an unpredictable climate so timing the move from pasture to crop is a risk; lucerne is difficult to establish and remove; and the need to manage the water table never stops... "Simplistically, if we look at a six-year phase farming rotation with three years under crop and three years under lucerne, we"re at best achieving 50 percent of potential crop yield over that time," he says... "We"ve found that lucerne"s ability to control recharge is much better from the second year of establishment, so perhaps we have to look at crop being over-sown in the second year," he says...

CliMate estimates stored soil moisture based on individual paddock data, such as the length of the fallow period, the amount of soil organic matter, stubble load, soil type and rainfall received during the fallow period... Research undertaken over several years by NSW DPI staff such as Col McMaster and Barry Haskins (now a private researcher/consultant) noted that delayed or missed fallow weed control opportunities quickly led to loss of stored soil moisture, as well as loss of more than 40kg/ha of available soil nitrogen...

Sandy, acid soils in high rainfall areas are most prone to potassium deficiency, particularly if cut for hay... Regional nutrient budgets show a progressive drawdown of potassium (K) as it is removed in plant products and, depending on cropping system and soils, there may be a need to consider the role of K. Use of K in Australia declined from 183 kt K in 2003 to 149 kt K in 2011 but did recover somewhat in 2012... Around ten times more K will be removed in hay than grain...

Larvae are often present in lucerne but most contract a viral disease that normally controls helicoverpa numbers... Spotted alfalfa aphids are potentially the most damaging of the aphids while blue-green aphids and, occasionally, pea aphids usually decrease production without causing serious plant losses... A common insect pest in lucerne in many districts, adults cause only minor leaf damage but their larvae, which are creamy white in colour and roughly resemble maggots, feed on taproots and secondary roots of lucerne plants...
